The first Star Wars game with a truly open world is on its way. In 2024 we can get started with Star Wars Outlaws, the new game from Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment. Read everything about the game here, including release date, characters, gameplay and editions.
Star Wars Outlaws release date and platforms
It has been announced that we are on August 30, 2024 Can play Star Wars Outlaws. At least, if you buy the standard version of the game. The more expensive Gold and Ultimate Editions of the game ensure that you can play Star Wars Outlawss three days earlier. The game will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S and PC.
Story of Star Wars Outlaws
In Star Wars Outlaws we play as Kay Vess. A newcomer to the underworld of the Star Wars universe, she dives in with enthusiasm. Vess has made enemies with the new criminal syndicate Zerek Besh with her cute axolotl/dog Nix (the animal is actually called a Merqaal). With a hefty price on her head, Kay is approached by Jaylen, who will help her rob the boss of that same syndicate.
The game takes place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, which means that the civil war between the Empire and the Rebellion is in full swing, which the underworld is of course more than happy to take advantage of. A new character in the franchise and head of Zerek Besh, Sliro, therefore tries to rally the various syndicates in the universe behind him.
Gameplay
Besides MMOs such as Star Wars Galaxies and Knights of the Old Republic, virtually no Star Wars games have been released that contain an open world. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has some planets with large areas to explore, but is still a fairly linear experience overall. This will change with Star Wars Outlaws, as the game contains open worlds that are more similar to what we expect from an open world game today. You travel from A to B on speeders and there are of course side missions that you can carry out for the various factions and inhabitants of the Star Wars universe, but it is not yet known how the planets will be filled up further.
What we do know is that Star Wars Outlaws is played from a third-person perspective. In the gameplay walkthrough we see that a silent approach is possible during the game, and that Nix is a kind of extension of Kay’s skills. The creature can, among other things, pull switches and levers to open new paths and pick up new weapons to bring to Kay. The walkthrough also shows how Kay switches her gun to a different mode, allowing her to fire a more powerful shot, for example.
The game’s story can also be influenced to a certain extent. As you do odd jobs for various syndicates, your reputation increases, although this can have a negative effect on your reputation towards other criminals. It’s possible that this will make certain quests more difficult, or play out differently based on how the universe views you.
